The Aircrews and Groundstaff of RAF Bomber Command and their American cousins in the USAAF are now finally gaining the respect so long denied to them with the recent dedication of the RAF Bomber Command memorial in London during 2012. As a direct result of this most fitting memorial interest in the achievements of these Airmen and Airwomen has never been higher. The main difference between both commands - other then some terminology, language, tatics and role - was that where's the American AF was for the large majority only American, the RAF was not. In RAF Bomber Command you would find almost every single country in the Allied cause represented (including American Volunteers pre 1941 who politely refused the order to join the AAF in many cases in 1942). The heroism of all these men and women on their Airstations during the war was undeniable, with just as many acts of bravery on the ground recognised as there were in the air. As horrendous as both Commands casualties were on Operations, there were also nearly just as many killed in training accidents or flying accidents from poor weather and other related factors as well. None the less both Air Forces pressed on towards the collective end goal of the Allied Nations, the unconditional surrender of the Third Reich, and in 1945 this goal was finally achieved but at a terrible cost. Noted Aviation Author and Photographer Philip Kaplan ably draws together an intriguing collection of archival photographs from German, American, British and Commonwealth sources as he examines those early years of the Bombers War.  The success of the long running Pen & Sword Images Of War series is due chiefly to its use of some of the worlds best known photographic archives, in concert with other less well known sources like survivors or associations representing or remembering those who served.
